Jeremiah 49:35-39 – Commentary

Any serious bible student knows that Israel exists under the watchful eye of the ALMIGHTY! God proclaims in Gen 12:3  And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. God defines the boundaries of Israel, fights the battles of Israel and is the restoring authority of Israel’s sovereignty throughout the ages for the rebuilding of her city, walls and the temple which have throughout history been destroyed due to her sins and the sins of the world.

All of the Kingdoms and nations of the earth who have sought to dominate her have come to violent ends or severe loss of status in the world. Any who shall dare to challenge God’s covenant with Abraham’s seed (Gen 15:18) now and in the future will suffer the same demise. We hear threats from Israel’s current and historic enemies of their desire to claim God’s jewel afresh. Current events and news flashes stoke the flames of hate for Israel as a nation and as a people. I assure you, we will see God make good on his claim to Zion and woe unto any who doubt His resolve!

Syria, Iran and Turkey have been the loudest voices of late to rattle the sabres of war. Iran calls for the destruction of Israel on a daily basis and Turkey bemoans it’s loss from the age of the Ottoman Empire. The showdown is coming and it will be sooner than later.

Israel’s enemies are celebrating the recent change in the political winds and a deteriorating relationship with the U.S. This is proof that they still don’t understand that it isn’t the U.S. or any other kingdom on earth that champions her cause! God’s judgements are forthcoming; sooner than later!

Could Elam’s judgment be on the horizon?

Jer 49:35-39 speaks of Gods judgment on Elam in the “latter days“. ancient Elam would have been located in what is today southern Iran on the coast of the Persian Gulf. As you will note from the map this area is currently the location of one of the hotly contested nuclear facilities, Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in current day Iran. Israel has made it clear they will not stand for Iran to acquire a nuclear bomb. Take note that this event will cause refugees to be scatted throughout all nations.

What event would cause such a mass exodus from the region? Could it be a nuclear event?

We are reminded daily of the threat posed by Iran’s incessant desire to develop a nuclear weapon and ballistic and cruise missile delivery system. There is no mystery as to the primary target of such destructive weapons; However, God has a vote in this matter … 35 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might. 36 And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come. 37 For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them: 38 And I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence the king and the princes, saith the LORD. 39 But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of Elam, saith the LORD. Selah!

Summary:

A discussion will no doubt arise regarding the timing of this prophetic event. This will not be the first such debate as to the fulfillment of this prophecy. As for me, I accept the “latter day” reference and find no cause to consider this a fulfilled prophecy. We have not seen any historical event that would satisfy all of it’s required detail. I remind you; prophecy is not gauged by % completion. All points must be fulfilled to be considered complete!

I find the mention of His throne being set in Elam to be of particular importance! As I pondered this and how it might be fulfilled, I was reminded of an article I read Sept. of 2020 that reported an “explosive growth of Christian evangelism” in Iran. Bingo! How better to fulfill this point but to establish His throne in the hearts of the faithful residents of this land! To expect this to be a physical throne would be a direct conflict with prophecies identifying His throne to be established in Jerusalem. Needless to say, I am watching; how about you? I am watching because I know, God has unfinished business! Selah
